Texture and pores

Pore size is largely inherited and cannot be permanently reduced. What can change is how visible pores are, which depends on how much is sitting in them and how rough the skin around them is. That distinction decides which treatments on this page are worth your money.

A pore looks bigger when it is full and when the skin around it is uneven, because both scatter light instead of reflecting it. That is why pores can look noticeably smaller the morning after a treatment without having changed size at all.

Texture is the more treatable half of this, and it is the half worth investing in. Resurfacing and microneedling work on the surface and the layer beneath it, building over a series rather than arriving all at once.

Be skeptical of anything that promises to shrink pores. Nothing does permanently. What treatment can do is leave them holding less and sitting in smoother skin, which is what people usually mean when they say their pores look better.

Questions

Can pores actually be made smaller?

Not permanently. Pore size is largely genetic. What changes is how much they hold and how smooth the skin around them is, and that changes how large they look, which is the part you actually see.

Why do my pores look worse in some photos?

Light direction. Overhead or side light throws shadow into every pore at once. It is not that your skin changed between one photo and the next.

Will one treatment be enough?

Usually not. The treatments that genuinely improve texture work by prompting repair, which accumulates over a series. A single session shows you the direction rather than the destination.
