Lip filler covers a wide range, from restoring what has thinned to deliberately adding more. Where you sit on that range is your decision, and Jyl will tell you plainly what she thinks suits your face.

Most people who ask for a natural result want definition more than volume: a clearer border, an even shape, a little more at the center. That takes less product than most expect.

What it helps with

  • Lips that have thinned over time
  • An uneven or undefined lip border
  • Asymmetry between the upper and lower lip
  • Flattening of the lip's natural shape
  • Added volume, where that is what you want

Who it's for

  • Anyone wanting more definition without an obvious change
  • Patients whose lips have lost fullness with time
  • Anyone who wants more volume and wants it done conservatively

Filler adds volume to the lip itself. It does not erase the fine lines above the lip, which usually need resurfacing instead. If that is what is bothering you, the fractional treatment for lips is the better answer and Jyl will say so.

What to expect

  1. Consultation

Jyl looks at the shape, the balance between upper and lower, and what you actually want, which is often different from what you first describe.

  2. The appointment

Numbing cream first, then placement. Lips are more sensitive than most areas and most people still describe it as very manageable.

  3. The first few days

Swelling is normal and lips swell more than anywhere else. Expect them to look fuller than the final result for two to three days.

  4. Settling

About two weeks to fully settle. Your photographs and your judgment should both wait until then.

Before your visit

  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Stop fish oil, vitamin E, ibuprofen and other blood thinners for three days beforehand if your doctor says it is safe to pause them.
  • Come with clean skin.
  • Let Jyl know if you have a dental appointment or any vaccination booked within two weeks either side.

After your treatment

Today

  • Stay upright for the next four hours.
  • Do not rub, massage or press on the treated areas today.
  • Skip exercise, hot yoga, saunas and anything that raises your heart rate until tomorrow.
  • Use a cool compress gently if you are swollen, never ice directly on the skin.
  • Swelling and bruising in the first days are normal and expected.
  • Call the practice straight away if you have severe or increasing pain, skin that looks white or mottled, or any change in your vision.

How Jyl approaches this

Jyl does not have one lip she gives everyone. She works to the shape you already have, and she will say no to a request she thinks will not suit you rather than take the booking. Most of her lip work is deliberately subtle, which is why people cannot tell it has been done.

Questions

How long does it last?

NEEDS APPROVAL: confirm the range Jyl quotes. Draft: Usually six to twelve months. Lips move constantly, so filler there does not last as long as elsewhere on the face.

Will everyone be able to tell?

Not if the aim is definition rather than volume. The look people recognize comes from quantity, and that is a choice rather than an inevitability.

Does it hurt?

Lips are sensitive, so numbing cream is used first. Most people find it very manageable, and it is over quickly.

How swollen will I be?

Noticeably, for two to three days. Do not book this in the week of an event. Four weeks before is comfortable.
